December 2005 - Christmas in Innsbruck

What I hope to present for you each this month is…well, something for any flight simmer to try regardless of what you like to fly. No, I have not run out of ideas, (in fact I’ve recently been working on my FOTMs for 2006) I was just curious as to what you liked to fly and wanted to see how you’d handle the weather into this, sometimes tricky, airport. Besides, this would be a GREAT PLACE to spend Christmas – so bring the family along this time!!
As I see it, there are about 7 categories of FS Aircraft:
Commercial
Regional
General Aviation / Bush Pilots
Classics / Old Timers
Military
Other (Helos, Blimps, Gliders, Aerobatics etc)
Misc. Craft (Paper Airplanes, Spaceships, Brooms, Clipper Ships, Trains etc)
So here’s what we’ll do: You’ll need to use Real-World Weather and make TWO landings and TWO take-offs at Innsbruck, Austria (LOWI). These will need to occur in any (air)craft from any THREE of the categories listed above. You can start from anywhere and fly to anywhere but you must show at least two full circuits through Innsbruck – more are certainly welcomed.
What I did for this FOTM then is just make some circuits through LOWI in various aircraft.
There are plenty of Innsbruck “Approach and Departure Plates” out there. I have worked up my own, unofficial plates as well. For Runway 8 you’ll fly the 130* radial outbound from the VOR 109.60. 9,400 feet at 32 DME – 6,000 feet at 40 DME – 4,000 feet at 46 DME at which point you’ll turn to about 081* and look for the runway. To go missed, head for the 313 NDB, then keep climbing over the 303 NDB and head back to the VOR.

For runway 26, there is an offset ILS at 110.10 HDG 256*. Set up by crossing the 303 NDB at 9,000 feet and fly heading 211*. You may intercept the ILS between 17-22 miles DME and at 9,000 feet. 6,000 feet by 9.3 miles DME – 4,000 feet by 6.5 miles DME – cross 313 NDB at 3,000 feet – runway heading 261*. For a missed approach some plates simply show a left turn-around back to 313, but I prefer to climb out toward the 109.60 VOR (That’s the 310* radial inbound the VOR).

For the GPS nuts out there I have a GPS-direct route too: Cross LOWZ at 16,000 feet holding 268* – 14,000 feet by DME (to LOWI) 43 miles – 10,000 feet by DME 26.3 – 8,000 feet by DME 18 – 8,000 feet at DME 16 then drop like crazy (160 knots = 1,200 fpm or so). You can also find this spot if you tune 115.20 on NAV1, dial in the 145* radial and cross that at 33.8 miles from the VOR. I have the MAP as DME 8, which is also about the 313 NDB. Turn to 263* and head on in. For a Missed Approach I again prefer to climb out toward the 109.60 VOR (That’s the 310* radial inbound the VOR).

Or just try this: http://www.flightsim.com/cgi/kds?$=main/howto/inns/inns.htm
As with any flight, the first rule is to fly safely. As with any FlightSim the point is to have fun. As with any of our FOTM features the idea is to learn something. I hope you each can achieve all this during our flights into and out of Innsbruck, Austria.

Merry Christmas!

Finally, a little video of a 757 flight (complete with type-o error!)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZ-ik7JhLKg
